    Botox in Your 30s: A 7-Day Pre-Treatment Checklist

The single biggest predictor of how a Botox appointment goes — for a first-time client in their 30s — is the seven days before it, not the appointment itself. Bruising, asymmetry, and that "did it even work?" feeling at week one are usually traceable to something simple a client did or didn't do in the prep window.

Here's the exact checklist we send to every new Botox client at Skin and Self. We've watched thousands of first appointments; this list is the difference between a flawless result and one that needs a touch-up at week two.

Day -7: stop the blood thinners

This is the most important step. Anything that thins your blood significantly increases your bruising risk. The list is longer than most people realize:

    • NSAIDs: ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin (unless your doctor has told you to take a daily aspirin — don't stop in that case; we'll work around it)
    • Fish oil and omega-3 supplements
    • Vitamin E (high-dose) and ginkgo biloba
    • Garlic supplements (cooking with garlic is fine)
    • Turmeric / curcumin supplements
    • St. John's Wort

If you're on a prescription blood thinner (warfarin, Eliquis, Plavix), don't stop — we'll plan around it, often spacing out injection points and using ice more aggressively. Tell us at consultation.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine throughout the prep week if you need pain relief — it doesn't affect platelets.

Day -5: cut back on alcohol

Alcohol thins the blood and dilates capillaries. The week of Botox, target less than 2 drinks total — and zero in the 24 hours before the appointment. Clients who drink heavily the night before consistently bruise more visibly than those who don't.

    Day -3: arnica and bromelain

Topical arnica gel applied to the forehead and around the eyes for 3 days before injection has modest evidence for reducing bruising. Oral bromelain (a pineapple-derived enzyme) at 500mg twice daily starting 3 days out has slightly stronger evidence. Both are over-the-counter, neither is required, but the cost-benefit is reasonable for first-timers.

    Day -2: skin prep

Stop any retinoids (tretinoin, retinol) for 48 hours before. Skip any chemical peels, microneedling, or strong actives in the 5–7 days before. The goal is to walk in with calm, intact skin so the injector can see your facial muscles working and place units precisely.

If you wear makeup, plan to come in clean-faced or be willing to have it removed. We'll provide a gentle cleanser if you forget.

    Day -1: hydrate and sleep

Drink water — at least 64oz the day before. Hydrated skin and tissue bruise less. Sleep 7+ hours. Don't fly the day of or the day after if you can avoid it (cabin pressure has minor effects on freshly-injected sites).

    Morning of: small steady meal

Eat a real breakfast or lunch beforehand. Some clients get vasovagal (lightheaded) on an empty stomach during injection — totally manageable, but easier to skip with food in your system. Skip caffeine if you're a heavy drinker; high caffeine = elevated heart rate = slightly more bleed at injection sites.

Bring photos of your face from the past 6 months — a few angles, no filters. They help us understand your baseline asymmetry and where movement actually originates.

    The appointment itself

Most first-time Botox appointments at our practice run 30–45 minutes. About half of that is consultation: we'll watch your face animate, map where you make expressions, and talk through what you actually want softened versus what's part of your character. We genuinely think a great Botox result preserves expression — clients who tell us they want "no movement at all" usually end up wanting more movement on the second appointment.

Injection itself is 10–15 minutes. Most clients describe it as a quick pinch with a slight pressure feel. Topical numbing isn't typically needed; ice between sites does most of the comfort work.

    The 24 hours after — non-negotiable

    • No lying flat for 4 hours. This isn't a strict rule everywhere, but we follow it. Stay upright; the goal is to keep the product where we placed it.
    • No exercise for 24 hours. Increased blood flow can spread the toxin slightly outside its target.
    • No facials, massages, or pressure on the face for 24–48 hours. Same reason.
    • Don't rub the injection sites.
    • You can apply makeup gently after 4 hours if you need to.

    What to expect on results

Botox starts working at 3–4 days, with full effect at 10–14 days. Don't judge the result before two weeks — and don't book a touch-up appointment before that. Most touch-ups are unnecessary; the result we'd assess at day 14 is usually different from what you see at day 5.

For first-timers in their 30s, our typical placement is 10–25 units total — forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet. Cost runs $14/unit, so most first appointments fall in the $140–$350 range. We never push to add areas; we'd rather you start small and add at the next visit.
