Laser Hair Removal: How Many Sessions, What Areas, Which Skin Types

Laser hair removal works — permanently — if you understand the science and follow the protocol. Most clients who say "it didn't work for me" either stopped after 2-3 sessions, came in during a hair growth phase mismatch, or had skin/hair type combinations that needed a different laser. Here's the complete walk-through.

    The science

Laser hair removal targets melanin in the hair shaft and follicle. The laser delivers a wavelength of light that's preferentially absorbed by pigment; that absorption converts to heat, which damages the follicle's regenerative capacity. The hair sheds in the days following treatment, and the follicle either doesn't grow back or grows back finer and slower.

The catch: hair grows in three phases — anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Only follicles in anagen phase respond to laser treatment. At any given moment, only 20-30% of your hair in a given area is in anagen phase. That's why a series is essential — each session catches the cohort of hair that's currently active.

    Skin types and which laser

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin from I (very fair, always burns) to VI (very dark, never burns). Different lasers work optimally for different skin types:

    • Fitzpatrick I-III (fair to medium): Diode and Alexandrite lasers work efficiently. Most lasers on the market handle these skin types well.
    • Fitzpatrick IV-VI (medium to deep): Nd:YAG laser is the safe and effective choice. Other lasers risk burns, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation. Choosing the right device for darker skin tones is non-negotiable for safety.

At our practice we screen for Fitzpatrick type at consultation and use the appropriate device for each client. If you have darker skin and a provider tries to use the same settings as someone with very fair skin, walk away.

    What works best

The ideal candidate has dark, coarse hair on light-to-medium skin. The contrast between hair pigment and skin pigment lets the laser distinguish targets cleanly. Less ideal: very fine, blonde, white, gray, or red hair — the laser can't see enough melanin to damage the follicle. We're honest at consultation if your hair color won't respond well.

    Treatable areas + typical pricing

    • Upper lip / chin: $70+ per session.
    • Underarms: $130+ per session.
    • Bikini line: $130+ per session. Brazilian: higher.
    • Lower legs: $200+ per session.
    • Full legs, full back, chest: larger areas, scaled accordingly.
    • Face (full): custom per area combination.

    How many sessions

Standard course: 6-8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for body areas, 3-4 weeks apart for facial areas. Most clients see 70-80% permanent reduction after 6 sessions, with the remaining hair finer and slower-growing than before.

Hormonal hair (chin, upper lip, abdomen in some women) tends to need additional sessions and possibly maintenance every 6-12 months indefinitely. PCOS-related hair growth is particularly resistant — we'll be direct about expectations at consultation.

    Prep before each session

    • Shave the area 24 hours before. The hair must be at the surface for laser to penetrate to the follicle, but not so long it absorbs energy unnecessarily. Don't wax, pluck, or thread for 4-6 weeks before treatment — that pulls the follicle out, which means there's nothing for the laser to target.
    • Stay out of the sun. No tanning (real or fake) for 4-6 weeks before. Tanned skin has more melanin and increases burn risk.
    • Skip retinoids and AHAs in the treatment area for 5-7 days before.
    • Avoid blood thinners and aspirin 24-48 hours before if possible (reduces minor bruising risk on sensitive areas).

    What to expect during treatment

The session takes 10-60 minutes depending on area. The sensation is often described as a "warm rubber band snap" with each pulse. Most clients tolerate it without numbing; topical numbing is available for sensitive areas. Cooling tips on the laser handpiece help.

    Aftercare

    • Mild redness and warmth for 24-48 hours is normal.
    • SPF 30+ daily on treated areas — non-negotiable.
    • No saunas, hot tubs, or aggressive workouts for 24 hours.
    • Hair "shedding" 1-2 weeks post-session is expected — this is the dead hair pushing out; new growth comes in finer.
    • If you see unusual blistering, dark marks, or persistent pain, call us — we'd rather address it early.

    Realistic timeline

A complete treatment course typically spans 6-9 months. Plan accordingly if you have an event in mind — start at least 4 months before to see meaningful reduction.
