Infrared Therapy: What the Envy Light Capsule Actually Does
By Olga Florez · Founder & Director, Skin and Self Med Spa
Envy Light Capsule infrared therapy at Skin and Self Med Spa, White Plains, NY
Red light and near-infrared therapy has 3,000+ peer-reviewed studies behind it — more clinical evidence than most aesthetic treatments people pay for confidently. The Envy Light Capsule we use at our White Plains practice combines specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light in a full-body delivery system. Here's what it actually does and who benefits most.
The science (briefly)
Photobiomodulation — the technical name for what red light and near-infrared therapy do — works at the cellular level by stimulating cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. The result is increased cellular ATP production, reduced oxidative stress, and improved local circulation.
The wavelengths matter. Red light (typically 630-660 nm) penetrates the dermis and is most effective for skin-level concerns. Near-infrared (810-850 nm) penetrates deeper into muscle, fascia, and joint tissue. The Envy Light Capsule delivers both wavelength ranges simultaneously across the entire body.
What it actually treats well
- Muscle recovery and DOMS: faster recovery from intense workouts, reduced post-exercise soreness. The application athletes use it for.
- Joint pain and inflammation: particularly knees, lower back, shoulders. The evidence base for chronic musculoskeletal pain is strong.
- Skin quality: improved collagen synthesis, reduced fine lines, better texture. Results show up over 4-8 weeks of consistent sessions.
- Wound healing and post-op recovery: we use it as part of post-operative protocols for clients recovering from plastic surgery — accelerated tissue repair, reduced bruising and swelling.
- Circadian rhythm and sleep: morning red-light exposure can improve sleep quality and energy levels. Some clients report this benefit even more than the physical ones.
- Hair restoration: red light at the scalp level supports follicle activity in early-stage thinning.
- Mood and seasonal affective response: particularly relevant in Northeast winters.
What it doesn't do
- Replace cosmetic treatments. It enhances skin quality but won't reduce deep wrinkles like Botox or filler.
- Burn fat. The marketing claims around "red light fat reduction" are mostly overstated; the legitimate research is more nuanced.
- Cure conditions. It's an adjunct to medical care, not a substitute.
Who benefits most
- Athletes and fitness enthusiasts using it weekly for recovery.
- Clients with chronic joint pain or inflammation.
- Post-surgical clients in early recovery (we coordinate timing with the referring surgeon).
- Clients with skin concerns wanting a non-invasive collagen-supportive treatment.
- Anyone recovering from a high-stress period (sleep, mood, immune support).
- Clients seeking the "stack" benefit — combining red light with lymphatic drainage, IV therapy, or recovery protocols.
The session
A typical session in the Envy Light Capsule runs 12-25 minutes. You're enclosed in a comfortable horizontal capsule wearing minimal clothing or eye protection only; the lights deliver from all sides simultaneously. No pain, no heat (despite the name "infrared," the heat output is mild), no recovery time.
Sessions can be done multiple times per week. The benefits are cumulative — single sessions feel pleasant but don't produce lasting change. Series of 8-12 sessions over 4-6 weeks is the typical starting protocol, with maintenance 1-2x per week thereafter.
Combining with other treatments
- Lymphatic drainage: outstanding combination. Red light reduces inflammation; lymphatic drainage clears the metabolites. We pair these in nearly every post-op recovery package.
- IV therapy: the recovery stack. Red light supports cellular function; IV nutrients fuel the response.
- Microneedling: separate by 24-48 hours. Microneedling creates the wound-healing trigger; red light supports the response.
- Sculptra: red light supports collagen synthesis broadly; complements Sculptra's PLLA-driven collagen response.
Costs in White Plains
Single session: starting at $50. Series packages bring per-session cost down significantly; clients on weekly maintenance typically invest $200-$400/month. Free consultations.
